The trends of the last few years show that WordPress is clearly on the rise as a content management system (CMS). However, you should test which content management system is right for you. Of course, you can test a number of systems beforehand to decide which is best for you. However, this method is very time-consuming and in the end you will not be able to answer whether the system will work in the long term.
The most important point here is of course that the system is future-proof. What's the point of a CMS that might not be further developed in 3 or 4 years? Then the game starts again. Another option, of course, is to simply jump into the deep end and test it out for yourself when you're in the middle of it. Ultimately, however, it is a gamble with possibly unnecessary costs.
Of course, you can also ask people who already use content management systems or you can simply ask us! We use WordPress for all customer projects, but we also know many other systems such as: B. Typo3, Joomla or Contao and can show you the advantages and disadvantages of the systems.
The question most people will ask themselves at the beginning is whether the system is easy to use or whether extensive training is required. Then there is the consideration of whether it should be an open source CMS or a commercial system. With an open source CMS like Typo3 or WordPress, you of course have a large community with countless developers. There are now over 50,000 plugins and countless themes for WordPress alone - from free to paid to premium themes. The active community also ensures that WordPress is always up to date and that security gaps are regularly closed. Ultimately, the question is whether WordPress meets your needs and we would be happy to help you clarify this question.
The trend in Google is a little help here. A comparison of search queries for Typo3, Joomla and WordPress in “Google Trends” shows very clearly that search queries for WordPress have increased rapidly since 2004 to date, while they have decreased significantly for Typo3 and Joomla.
The reasons are varied.
For a long time, Typo3 was THE content management system for large companies, corporations and online magazines with several thousand pages. But Typo3 has a big disadvantage. Due to the complexity of the system, extensive training for editors is essential and adjustments and extensions to the system are expensive. Joomla, also one of the first really large open source CM systems, shows a clear trend in the years 2008 to 2010. That was the time of Joomla version 1.5, which was very popular. However, the developers missed the trend and no new versions, updates or security patches were released during this time. The result was a system with endless security holes that made it easy for hackers to break into the system. It wasn't until 2012 that the Joomla developers became active again and new versions and regular updates were released. Nevertheless, many of the former loyal Joomla users switched to other systems and the new hype didn't materialize.
WordPress, on the other hand, has been showing steady growth since the first version was released on May 27, 2003. The forecasts for the next few years show that this trend will continue to increase. Proof that WordPress is becoming increasingly popular.
As a WordPress agency, we have had good experience with WordPress for many years and can give you a rough overview over the phone as to whether it is the right system for you and your company.
